Overview of the Languedoc and its departments
Departments of the Languedoc - Aude, Gard, Herault, Pyrenees
With its beaches, mountains and blue skies, Languedoc in southern France has one of the most famous landscapes in the world. And to make it even more agreeable, the best villages boast fine stone houses, squares shaded by plane trees, fountains and countless butchers, bakers and cafés.
The climate is Mediterranean and the way of life laid-back. According to the Times Newspaper this is one
of the healthiest places in Europe in which to live, because of the
area’s lack of heavy industry and the diet, which includes lots of
fish, fresh fruit, olive oil and wine. And the UK specialist magazine French Property News claims in one of its recent publications that the Languedoc is the most authentic region of France to buy
property in.
The Languedoc area lies to the west of the River Rhone and nestles in the foothills of the Pyrenees. As you would expect this is an area where a strong Spanish influence meets the traditional French with astounding results. Medieval towns and forgotten hideaways are waiting to be discovered. A discovery made easier recently by the arrival of the low-cost airlines into the region. With stunning scenery, fabulous beaches and a wonderful climate, summer temperatures regularly reach 30°C, this is a golden property opportunity just waiting to happen.
Property prices in this area are much lower than in other areas of France that share the same sort of geography and facilities. For an area that basks in hot summer sun, has magnificent beaches, ski resorts and famous national parks the prices here are staggeringly inexpensive. This really is the last undiscovered area of France in terms of the quality and diversity of the property it has on offer.
Languedoc's biggest claim to fame is its wine production. Today it produces more than a third of the grapes in France, and is a focus for outside investors. Wines from the Mediterranean coast of Languedoc are labeled as Languedoc, those from the interior have other labels such as Fronton, Gaillac, or Limoux to the west - and Côtes du Rhône towards east.
