Aude
Land area: 6139 km² - Population: 309,770
Located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees Mountains range, Aude really can offer a unique aspect of the French lifestyle. This Department not only offers an all-year round experience as opposed to it being merely a summer holiday destination, but it is a tourist hot spot due to the city of Carcassone.
As the préfecture (capital) of the Aude Department, Carcassone reinforces the traditional lifestyle of Aude. This is seen by the area being re-vamped to much of its medieval stature, making Carcassonne today a tourist trap, attracting great hordes of visitors in the summer, and rightly so. But despite all the tourist paraphernalia it remains a beautiful place. At only 90 kms (56 Miles) from one of the largest airports in France at Toulouse, this adds to the appeal of visiting Carcassone.
Another place worth visiting in Aude is Limoux. The town is perhaps best known for its Winter festival called Fècos, often referred to as a Carnival or fête. It is generally referred to as Carnaval de Limoux in French language. This takes place between January and Easter and is conducted in Occitan, the traditional language of the area (In Occitan the word Fècos is the name of a dance characteristic of the festival). The cafe scene is dominant in Limoux where food and drink represent the dominant cultural pastime.
Fleury d'Aude - Saint-Pierre-la-Mer - Narbonne Plage

The run of modern beach resorts just 15 minutes outside of Narbonne
have seen much development over recent years, giving visitors the pick
of fantastic facilities along the swathe of sandy beach immediately
south of the River Aude. Fleury is a charming languedocien village,
where you can enjoy the festival atmosphere of evening street markets
in the summer. At Saint Pierre visitors can book lessons in sailing,
windsurfing and kite surfing, or hire equipment if they already already
know how.
