Gard

Sub header

This department of the Languedoc region is stooped in Roman history, dating back to the first and second centuries. This can be noticed on visiting the capital of Gard, Nimes, which has a rich vein of Roman culture flowing through the picturesque city. Plough your way through the isolated outskirts of Nīmes to reach its heart, which started pounding when the Romans arrived over 2000 years ago.

Excellently preserved buildings and remarkable contemporary constructions sculpt the skyline of a city that is still the same city it was all those years ago despite the period of metamorphosis which it underwent due to changing times in the area. For example, the elliptical Roman Amphitheatre, which is the best preserved Roman arena in France. Today it is still used for a variety of shows and concerts for the general public. Nimes is also historically known for its textiles, in particular denim, the fabric used for blue jeans; which derives its name from this city (serge de Nimes).
