Herault - (34)
Land area: 6101 km² - Population: 896,441
Herault is one of the northern departments of the Languedoc and is renowned for it's unspoiled Mediterranean beaches especially around the pretty villages of Sete and Le Cap d'Agde.
Further inland there are forested woodlands and mountains dotted with many beautiful hill-towns and villages like Pezenas and Clemont l'Herault. Houses in this area tend to be made out of mountain stone, are solid and beautifully made while still offering amazing value for money.
To the south of Herault, around the city of Bezier the country side starts to flattens out. The best properties for sale here tend to be either in the towns and villages or the older style farmhouses.
The capital city of the Herault - Montpellier - is a clean, attractive city, close to the sea with an international airport hosting many flights a week from the UK and other European centres.
The city has been charming foreigners for many years with its great restaurants, historic central district and
active cultural scene - and more and more of people have decided to make the move and relocate to this ancient city that has such a great lifestyle. In fact opinion polls in France show that Montpellier is the place where most
French people would prefer to live and work.
In short, Montpellier is a commercial, cultural, academic and
cosmopolitan centre, with a renowned university with some of the oldest law and medicine faculties in Europe.

Just jump on a flight to Montpellier and prepare to relax. Most of the coastal area is part of a conservation zone, the Conservatoire du Littoral et des Espaces Lacustres. Highlands
Hillsides covered with vineyards changing colour with the seasons, hamlets nestling in lush pastures, villages perched on rocky crags, cherry trees in blossom , chestnut groves, forests of beech and pine... you’ll find all this in the mountains of Hérault.
When climbing the Caroux or hiking in the gorges along the Vis river, you could go for hours without seeing a soul, except the occasional angler or sheep.
The hospitality of this region is rooted in tradition – and you’ll find some of the best food from France is produced here. Everything you eat is made locally and the welcome you receive is genuinely warm and heartfelt -
The Heart of the Herault
The Languedoc plain has seen it all: from the Romans who planted vines and olive groves to the builder-monks; from crusades against the Cathars to the architecture of the enlightenment; from the peasants of the past to the wine growers of today.
Every age has left its mark. The Canal du Midi is a story in itself, but each abbey, medieval street and Roman fort has a tale to tell. And there are thousands of local products to taste too!
